About the Prints
My initial approach to photography is documentary. I try to capture an image that is dynamic, represents the surreal nature of life, and defies my natural instinct to improve it. Every once in a while that happens, and many of the images on this website were captured with a single click of the shutter. The rest of them have been manipulated in a variety of ways. Multiple exposures, and painting photographs are a couple of common methods.
The black and white portfolio is a mixture of old and new technology. Some of the older work is the result of enlarging and hand printing negatives in a traditional darkroom. Those photographs are made with fiber base paper and have been processed and selenium toned to archival standards. I have recently retired my film cameras, so the remainder of this portfolio are prints from scanned negatives or images captured with a digital camera.
Images in the color portfolio are digital and printed from a high end ink jet printer. Some of them originated from black and white prints that were painted and scanned. Others are digitized slides, and an increasing number are products of a digital camera. Some of the photographs are a combination of images and others appear as they did in real time. They all began as a single click of the shutter.
